Prayer Practice: Examen Prayer
Day 7, Saturday, January 10
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”
—Psalm 139:23
The Examen is a simple, reflective, end-of-day prayer that helps us review our day with humility, gratitude, and trust. This practice has been used by Christians for centuries as a way of cultivating spiritual awareness. It invites us to slow down long enough to see our day clearly—not through self-judgment, but through God’s gracious presence. The Examen is not about replaying the day to critique yourself. It’s about bringing the day into the light of God’s love and allowing Him to shape you over time.
How to Practice
Enter your prayer closet at the end of the day or during a quiet moment.
Step One: Become Aware of God’s Presence
Begin by acknowledging that God is with you. Take a few slow breaths and invite Him to guide your reflection.
Step Two: Give Thanks
Look back over the day and name moments you’re grateful for. These can be big or small. Gratitude helps us see God’s goodness more clearly.
Step Three: Review the Day
Gently walk through the events of the day. Pay attention to moments where you felt close to God, and moments where you felt distant, distracted, or resistant.
Step Four: Confess and Receive Grace
Where you notice sin, impatience, or failure, bring it honestly before God. Receive His forgiveness without excuses or shame.
Step Five: Look Toward Tomorrow
Ask God for grace for the day ahead. Offer Him your plans, your concerns, and your hopes.
Gentle Reminder
The Examen is not about perfection. It’s about awareness. Over time, this practice helps us notice patterns, grow in wisdom, and become more attentive to God’s presence in everyday life.
